Swansea became the UK’s second official City of Sanctuary in May 2010. It formally adopted its constitution in February 2012. City of Sanctuary is a national movement committed to building a culture of hospitality and welcome, especially for refugees seeking sanctuary from war and persecution. Swansea has offered a home to people who have lost their homes and families and we wish to celebrate the welcoming attitudes of Swansea people and organisations.

Volunteer Opportunities*

• A Better Welcome to Swansea is a project which aims to provide a warm welcome to asylum seekers and refugees (participants) when they first arrive in Swansea
• Sanctuary Speakers: to deliver awareness-raising sessions at various venues
• Translators: Supporting people to access services 

*All our volunteers are offered induction training, regular supervisions and support, travel expenses and references after you have completed 30 hours of volunteering.

Swansea Asylum Seekers Support (SASS)

We organise "COMMUNITY DROP-INS" twice a week for asylum-seekers and refugees, other newcomers and residents, families and people on their own. About 150 people come every week for: free refreshments, play for children (with professional playworkers in the Welcome to Play project), English learning and conversation, advice, information, table-tennis, chess and other games, and friendship. We also organise or help organise special events. And we publish refugee literature with Hafan Books.

Bloom Swansea

A meeting place in the community encouraging inclusion, volunteering, holistic learning, sustainable living, development, fairtrade, respect, healthy and strong communities. A place where everyone is valued.

Foodbank: Everyday people in the UK go hungry for reasons ranging from redundancy to receiving an unexpected bill on a low income. The Foodbank provides a minimum of three days emergency food and support to people experiencing crisis in Swansea. MONDAYS 1PM-3PM

CALL IN ON FRIDAYS: Red Café youth nights are a great place to hang out and catch up with mates. It’s a friendly and comfortable venue.

We offer a wider selection of books than most shops, from modern fiction and leisure interest to more specialist subjects, classics, and rare or collectable books. We also sell a selection of music. Oxfam is part of the sustainable Swansea trail. Volunteering with us is a challenging and rewarding experience. Join us every other Friday at The GRAFT at the National Waterfront Museum, Swansea. Everyone welcome! No experience needed. Grow Food and Share Produce! 10-12:30pm – every other Friday. Friendly Sessions led in growing food, carpentry and exploring making and craft. Accreditation offered, a friendly face, a cuppa and public transport costs refunded.

EYST: Ethnic Youth Support Team

Organisation which supports BME young people and their families including refugees and asylum seekers.

• Volunteers to offer interpretation, job-search support, advice and guidance.
• Access to Computers for Job-search, Benefits Registration, etc.
• Referral to external agencies; Migrant Help, Asylum Justice etc.

EYST is sometimes able to scan/send documents to Asylum Justice if an appointment is needed outside of drop-in times, or if you want Asylum Justice to go to court with you.
