Swansea became the UK’s second official City of Sanctuary in May 2010. It formally adopted its constitution in February 2012. City of Sanctuary is a national movement committed to building a culture of hospitality and welcome, especially for refugees seeking sanctuary from war and persecution. Swansea has offered a home to people who have lost their homes and families and we wish to celebrate the welcoming attitudes of Swansea people and organisations.

  • A Better Welcome to Swansea is a project which aims to provide a warm welcome to asylum seekers and refugees (participants) when they first arrive in Swansea
  • Sanctuary Speakers: to deliver awareness-raising sessions at various venues
  • Translators: Supporting people to access services 
*All our volunteers are offered induction training, regular supervisions and support, travel expenses and references after you have completed 30 hours of volunteering.

SHARP: Swansea Humanitarian Aid Response Project 

Focusing on supporting the needy with humanitarian aid and International crisis relief: Syrian refugee appeal/Greece/France/Austria/Germany/Syria/Turkey/Lebanon and locally housed refugees.

We also work with local organisations and have started a campaign to help the homeless over the winter and are ready to support anybody in a difficult situation.

Donated items made available to local refugees and asylum seekers.

We do this through volunteers who offer a room in their home, or who support the scheme in other ways. We are currently developing other ways of helping destitute asylum seekers.

We have nothing to do with the Home Office or any other Government Agencies.

Foodbank: Everyday people in the UK go hungry for reasons ranging from redundancy to receiving an unexpected bill on a low income. The Foodbank provides a minimum of three days emergency food and support to people experiencing crisis in Swansea. MONDAYS 1PM-3PM

Celebrating Bicycles with the Re-cycle Swansea Workshop

Re-Cycle was set up as a social enterprise almost 7 years ago to reduce the widespread waste of bikes, keep Swansea supplied with reliable and affordable bikes and to provide training in cycle maintenance.

Matt’s Cafe is part of the Real Junk Food (TRJF) Project, a network of national and international cafes (both permanent and pop-ups) with one central objective: to intercept food waste destined for landfill and use it to feed people who need it, on a pay as you feel basis. Matt’s Cafe is the first registered cafĂ© on the TRJF network in Swansea.

British Red Cross

The British Red Cross helps vulnerable asylum seekers and refugees access essential services and adjust to life in a new country.

Family Tracking Service - We can help when families are separated by armed conflict, disaster or migration. When normal means of communication breakdown, we can still send Red Cross messages to relatives.

Family Reunion - The Red Cross plays a specific role in the reunion of families who have been separated around the world, and who have been allowed by the Home Office to join their families in the UK. In some cases, we can help pay travel costs for refugees whose families live overseas and have been granted a visa to come to the UK.

BikeAbility Wales is a charity that provides cycling opportunities to people of all ages and abilities. Our aim is to give people the opportunity to improve their physical health and psychological well-being through cycling.

We are based at Dunvant Rugby Club, Swansea, where we have a large variety of specialist cycles. Each one is specifically designed to allow people to experience the freedom and empowerment of physical activity.

ACC launched their Asylum Seekers Community Transport Scheme.

ACC aim to provide advice and support to enable you to better settle into the local community. ACC Wales also run educational programmes for people of all ages and abilities including English language, citizenship, and information on various health issues.
